Stocking on the Derwent

In response to angler concerns of reduced catches and a suspected decline in recruitment of juveniles barbel and chub, the Environment Agency has recently stocked several hundred juvenile fish into the river Derwent. The fish were reared at the EA’s fish farm at Calverton, which is funded by the rod licence fees and were marked with alcian blue dye before their release. The EA hope that catch return data of the marked fish will help them to gain a better understanding of fish recruitment and movements within the lower Derwent.
