| Carp fish loses |

The subject has raised its head again this year as it does every year – many comments in the forum – all with good intention but not much substance. We the Pride have had the Environment Agency check out the waters we have when we have had losses each time it has happened. All without a conclusion as to the cause other than it always happens this time of year after spawning and the resulting stress. We have our own theory, it is a fact we all have to die sometime – perhaps not you – you may be immortal? but if you are you are the only one. A carp we are advised lives up to 30 years and in cases gains weight up to 50 lbs plus – these are the exceptions – the majority I would suggest living in good conditions make it up to 25lbs – and as with humans if 100 years of age is the maximum we live to many die before 50 – so why should fish be different. We don’t think they are – and the time that fish, and in particular carp in overstocked un-natural waters are particularly vulnerable to the stress that might tip the balance and cause their death is in the spring and early summer following the almost dormant time they have in cold waters of the winter. This spring 2007 being very different to the last spring of 2006 – this year almost a phased in spring with very much reduced fish losses to last year when we had instant summer with no spring and large quantity fish losses. Other waters in the area have experienced losses differently – the one thing that is definite none of it can be avoided – we must just get used to the fact that in spring of each year we are going to lose fish – only the numbers will change year on year. We as a club must plan for these losses and ensure we maintain stocks and have a stocking program to make up any losses. We all try to come up with a good reason for any carp fish deaths and find it most uncomfortable to see what looks like prime fish dead by the water side but to us this is part of the natural cycle of life and death for carp. We believe we now have this stocking program in place so please continue to enjoy your angling on the Pride. |
